TUEZZ., NOV. 18TH, KUVO is hosting a party for DPS music faculty and
staff at Dazzle Restaurant and Lounge, 930 Lincoln Street, to kick off
their partnership. The event, sponsored by Black and Read Books and
Music, will feature music by trumpeter Hugh Ragin, a faculty member of
South High School, drummer Manny Lopez, coach intern with North High
School, and pianist Ron Jolly, who teaches at Career Education Center
Middle College of Denver. ~~~ "We've been encouraging Denver's
students to participate in America's musical art form, jazz, and we're
delighted to formalize this partnership with the Denver public
schools," says Tina Cartagena, KUVO's Director of Marketing. An
exciting, new partnership between jazz89 KUVO and the Denver Public
Schools has jazz going to the schools and kids coming to KUVO. Friday,
October 17, marked the beginning of this unique association when music
students and their parents from Abraham Lincoln High School went to
the radio station to watch and listen to the vibrant sounds of the
Janine Santana Group, a Latin Jazz band that combines traditional and
authentic Afro-Cuban rhythms with mainstream jazz and elements of
Funk, as they performed in KUVO's Phyllis A.Greer Performance Studio
during the Fall Membership Drive. ~~~ "The kids were really blown
away! Their being there actually made the performance more exciting,"
said Richard Serianni, Director of the DPS secondary school programs.
"The performers could tell that the kids were excited, and so they fed
off each other. While at the studio, the students had an opportunity
to introduce themselves on the air. It was a really neat experience
for everyone." ~~~ When Serianni, who implements the partnership, gets
word from KUVO that there is a musician scheduled to perform in the
studio, he contacts the music teacher at a given school to arrange for
music students to attend the session. "There are a number of things
that I consider when choosing a school, such as its demographics, what
kids might be interested in jazz, what music teachers might be
receptive to the idea, and of course, whether or not the school has
already participated." he explained. ~~~ Contact: Tina Cartagena,

Whether you listen to KUVO or are a musician that has copyrighted
music out there being played on-air this subject is probably of
interest. A recent AP article discusses some legislation that may go
into effect that will relate to music played on Internet radio
stations. ~~~~~ An exerpt from the article says: "The two sides have
been negotiating new royalty rates following the federal Copyright
Royalty Board's ruling in March 2007 that dramatically increased the
rates that Internet radio stations must pay artists and record labels.
Internet radio stations say the new rates — which most but not all are
paying — would effectively put them out of business." ~~~~~

"It doesn't hurt that Gilmore
has recruited local leaders to explore the music, including
vibraphonist Greg Harris, trumpeter Brad Goode and saxophonist Peter
Sommer. It's nice to hear such rejuvenating orchestral arrangements on
a local level, and here's hoping Ninth and Lincoln sells, oh, 10,000
of these." - Denver Post The Ninth + Lincoln Orchestra is a musical
project aiming to marry
Denver's finest jazz players with new streams in the world of big band
composition; to combine the shapes and textures of the new
generation's aesthetic with the standard jazz ensemble. Its repertoire
bridges the gap between jazz tradition and modern musical forms. The
band features the finest performers in Colorado's music scene
including members of Future Jazz Project, Convergence, The Ken Walker
Sextet, The Czars, Hamster Theatre, and Jazz Faculty from all of the
fine college music programs in the region. Ninth+Lincoln was formed
in 2005 by Tyler Gilmore, the leader/conductor/and main composer for
the ensemble. Inspired by his experiences at the Henry Mancini
Institute he began forming the group in the Fall of 2005. Since then
the band has steadily refined their sound and music library, focusing
more on original music and tending toward a sound as influenced by
electronic music and modern classical as standard jazz big band
repertoire. --- Contact Information --- email: info@9thandlincoln.com

--- "...a well-programmed and frequently stimulating set that unfolds its
layers of sound in striking fashion." - DownBeat. A Burst of Fine New
Releases by Bret Saunder Denver Post 4/6/2008 ---
www.denverpost.com ---Ninth + Lincoln Orchestra
"The self-titled first disc from Ninth and Lincoln (Dazzle Records)
has a vast, ambitious
sound that must conjure up the open spaces composer/leader Tyler
Gilmore grew up with in rural Wyoming. You can practically hear the
currents blasting through the Wind River Canyon near his hometown of
Riverton, and the expansive, rockish arrangements really bring
something new to big-band charts. It doesn't hurt that Gilmore has
recruited local leaders to explore the music, including vibraphonist
Greg Harris, trumpeter Brad Goode and saxophonist Peter Sommer. It's
nice to hear such rejuvenating orchestral arrangements on a local
level, and here's hoping Ninth and Lincoln sells, oh, 10,000 of
these." To see this happenin' Orchestra stay tuned to: April 27th, 7pm

Ninth + Lincoln's new CD! --- The Ninth + Lincoln Orchestra is a
musical project aiming to marry Denver's finest jazz players with new
streams in the world of big band composition; to combine the shapes
and textures of the new generation's aesthetic with the standard jazz
ensemble. Its repertoire bridges the gap between jazz tradition and
modern musical forms. The band features the finest performers in
Colorado's music scene including members of Future Jazz Project,
Convergence, The Ken Walker Sextet, The Czars, Hamster Theatre, and
Jazz Faculty from all of the fine college music programs in the
region. --- Ninth+Lincoln was formed in 2005 by Tyler Gilmore, the
leader/conductor/and main composer for the ensemble. Inspired by his
experiences at the Henry Mancini Institute he began forming the group
in the Fall of 2005. Since then the band has steadily refined their
sound and music library, focusing more on original music and tending
toward a sound as influenced by electronic music and modern classical
as standard jazz big band repertoire --- Contact Information: email:

7:30 p.m. The Either/Orchestra is a 10-piece jazz ensemble – two
trumpets, trombone, three saxophones, piano, acoustic bass, drums and
congas – based in Cambridge, MA. Founded in 1985, by
saxophonist/composer Russ Gershon, the E/O combines the agility and
freedom of a jazz combo, raw power and subtle coloring of a jazz
orchestra and deep grooves of Afro-Latin music.
They have performed in clubs, concert halls and festivals in 34 states
plus Canada, Italy, Portugal, Holland, Finland, Russia, Ethiopia and
Uganda. Neither a tribute band nor a neo-classical museum piece, the
group is constantly finding new inspirations. Among their explorations
has been the rich world of Ethiopian music, which finds a natural home
in an American jazz band. Their leader has described it as "exotic and
inexplicably familiar, warm and inviting but spicy and spiky… spinning
tales of love and heartache." American jazz was heavily influenced by
African roots, and Ethiopian big band music completes a circle through
the influence of American jazz. EXTRA ~~~ Join us at 6:30 Behind The
