Joe Bonner --- One of the celebrated sons of the worldwide jazz
community and the namesake of The Bonner Party, Joseph Bonner can be
heard every Sunday evening at 8 p.m. at the Mercury Café. Bonner has
enjoyed musical tenures with several of the greatest jazz artists of
all time, including Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Max Roach, Roy
Haynes, Billy Harper and Pharaoh Sanders. He has released over a dozen
albums as a leader as well as appearing on dozens more as a featured
soloist and composer. Joseph was formally educated at Virginia State
College, but his more significant learning transpired hanging out with
Miles Davis and meeting John Coltrane. Influenced by Art Tatum, McCoy Tyner and
Thelonius Monk, maestro Bonner's improvisations employ his deep roots
in modern jazz, gospel, blues, R&B and Latin forms. The Mercury Cafe presents

Whether you listen to KUVO or are a musician that has copyrighted
music out there being played on-air this subject is probably of
interest. A recent AP article discusses some legislation that may go
into effect that will relate to music played on Internet radio
stations. ~~~~~ An exerpt from the article says: "The two sides have
been negotiating new royalty rates following the federal Copyright
Royalty Board's ruling in March 2007 that dramatically increased the
rates that Internet radio stations must pay artists and record labels.
Internet radio stations say the new rates — which most but not all are

Connie Haines dies at 87; big band singer co-starred with Sinatra By

Haines, a petite and dynamic big band singer who performed alongside
Frank Sinatra in the Harry James and Tommy Dorsey orchestras, died
Monday in Clearwater, Fla. The cause of death was myasthenia gravis,
an autoimmune neuromuscular disease. She was 87.
Haines was best known as a singer with a knack for rhythm, and many of
her most successful recordings -- 25 of which each sold more than
50,000 copies -- featured her crisp, swinging vocal style. From: Don
