Public Schools and studied under the late Professor Howard Reynolds of
CU. Morrison eventually moved to Denver and continued his work with
the late David Abromwitz of Denver. In 1920, he toured the U.S.,
Europe, Mexico and Canada with the Morrison Orchestra. In 1935,
Morrison, Webster Rucker and a dozen others were granted a charter by
the National Federation of Musicians. It was the only professional
Negro union in Denver with a national affiliation. Morrison was
always active in church and civic endeavors. He has to his credit
many compositions and arrangements including spirituals, jazz and
classics, and many awards. Morrison lived at 2558 Gilpin St. with his
wife of 63 years and daughter and three sons. He was an outstanding
citizen of Denver, the Five Points neighborhood and music.
Freddy Rodriquez, Sr.

sent to Seattle where he played in the Second Division Army Band and
local jazz clubs. He later returned to Denver and began playing
around the thriving local jazz scene, particularly the Rainbow Lounge.
In the late 1950s, Rodriguez moved to L.A. where he was a member of
the prestigious Gerald Wilson Big Band for 10 years. He also played
in many Latin bands in L.A., including the acclaimed Jazz Corps. In
the late 70s, Rodriguez returned to Denver where he plays regularly at
El Chapultepec in LoDo. He is a member of the Denver Municipal Jazz
Band and still plays Saturday nights with his son Freddy Rodriguez,
Jr.'s band at Lechuga's in the Highland neighborhood.

Dr. Sam Gill

contributed to Denver's music scene as a teacher, performer and
ambassador. In 1960, Dr. Gill joined the Denver Symphony Orchestra
after completing his education, which included bachelor and master
degrees from both Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music. He
received his Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of
Colorado, Boulder in 1989. Dr. Gill's accomplishments include the
Symphony Society Award for Highest Achievement in Music, mention in
Notes and Tones by Arthur Taylor and listings in Who's Who in Music
and Who's Who among Black Americans. Dr. Gill has performed with jazz
greats such as Max Roach, Thelonious Monk, J.J. Johnson and many
others. He enjoys swimming and chess and is a Master Mason and a
Shriner.
George Morrison, Sr.
George Morrison, Sr. was born in Fayette, Missouri in September 1891.
He passed in November 1974. Morrison's musical career began when he
was a youngster in his hometown of Fayette. He attended Boulder
Freddy Rodriguez's family moved to Denver in 1936. While attending
West High School, he discovered jazz and began playing the tenor sax.
After graduating in 1948, Rodriguez enlisted in the U.S. Army and was
sent to Seattle where he played in the Second Division Army Band and
local jazz clubs.
Local artist Li Hardison was commissioned to create cast-bronze awards
for the honorees. A native of Harlem, figurative sculptor Li Hardison
has created a body of work that includes both public and private
commissions. Li expresses the complexity and passion of the human
spirit through her art. – NEW THIS YEAR!

From Bob Montgomery: Hi everyone, just an update on Clark, he was in
Kansas City to perform with the Kansas City Youth Orchestra on May 16
and was taken to the University of Kansas Medical Cardiac Center with
severe chest pain. He had 97% blockage to his heart and stints were
put into place successfully (and fortunately in time). He is resting
well and doing therapy and is responding amazingly well for a man 87
years old (but then Clark has always been a fighter - both
figuratively and literally). He will probably go home in about a week.

The Ninth + Lincoln Orchestra is a musical project aiming to marry
Denver's finest jazz players with new streams in the world of big band
composition; to combine the shapes and textures of the new
generation's aesthetic with the standard jazz ensemble. Its repertoire
bridges the gap between jazz tradition and modern musical forms. The
band features the finest performers in Colorado's music scene
including members of Future Jazz Project, Convergence, The Ken Walker
Sextet, The Czars, Hamster Theatre, and Jazz Faculty from all of the
fine college music programs in the region. Ninth+Lincoln was formed
in 2005 by Tyler Gilmore, the leader/conductor/and main composer for
the ensemble. Inspired by his experiences at the Henry Mancini
Institute he began forming the group in the Fall of 2005. Since then
the band has steadily refined their sound and music library, focusing

sound that must conjure up the open spaces composer/leader Tyler

something new to big-band charts. It doesn't hurt that Gilmore has

TUEZZ., 6/3/2008 --- An evening with Return To Forever STARRIN' Corea,
Clarke, Di Meola & White --- Chick Corea ~ keyboardist; Stanley Clarke
~ bassist; Al Di Meola ~ guitarist; Lenny White ~ drummer Legendary
jazz/rock fusion group Return To Forever is reuniting for the first
time in 25 years for a summer tour of North America and Europe.
Beginning this June, the classic lineup of keyboardist Chick Corea,
bassist Stanley Clarke, guitarist Al Di Meola and drummer Lenny White
are scheduled to play between 30 and 40 concerts across North America.
After a month's worth of theater and small amphitheaters gigs in such
major U.S. cities as Los Angeles, Denver, San Francisco, Chicago and
New York, Return To Forever will travel to Europe in July. In support
of the upcoming tour, Return To Forever will release an anthology of
remixed and remastered songs from such classic albums as "Hymn of the
Seventh Galaxy," "Where Have I Known You Before," "No Mystery" and
"Romantic Warrior." Wait a minute: Corea, Di Meola, Clarke and White?
That's the classic lineup of Return to Forever, one of the groups that
defined the jazz-rock fusion of the '70s. They haven't played together
in 25 years, swore they'd never have a reunion. Right. But never say
never. (Look at the Eagles). Return to Forever is, well, returning.
And last month, the rehearsals were already underway for the RTF
reunion tour that undoubtedly will be the big jazz news of the summer.
During rehearsals, the loose and swinging mood triggered a palpable
sense of joy in the room -- the eye contact and spontaneous smiles
exchanged by the players were visible indications of the music's rich
improvisational symbiosis. It's the real deal: Return to Forever, back
again -- bringing a 21st century perspective to the visceral blend of
rock energy with the improvisation and compositional structures of
jazz that made the quartet a phenomenon of the '70s, competing with
musicians such as Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Weather Report and the
Mahavishnu Orchestra for the favor of both jazz and prog-rock
audiences. --- With only 1,870 seats, the Paramount Theatre is

Mona Clayton Hinton 1919-2008
Edmonia - Mona - Clayton Hinton, the widow of noted jazz musician and
documentarian Milt Hinton (1910-2000), died on May 3, 2008, at North Shore
Hospital after a long illness. She was living at the Hinton family
residence on
Milt Hinton Place in the Queens section of New York City.
The Hintons first met at Milt's grandmother's funeral in 1939 and were
inseparable for the next 61 years. Mona traveled extensively with Milt
throughout his career. She was the only spouse on the road with the Cab
Calloway Orchestra in the 1940s, where, according to Milt, she was extremely
helpful in finding rooms and meals for band members especially when the band
worked in small towns during the Jim Crow era. During the '50s and '60s when
Milt was working day and night in the New York studios, Mona kept
the books and
made often complicated transportation arrangements. And during the last two
decades of his life, Milt and Mona got to travel to jazz festivals and clinics
around the world - first class.
In 1958, at her husband's request, Mona took the celebrated home movie footage
(the only movie in existence) of the Esquire Magazine photo shoot on a Harlem
brownstone stoop that was memorialized in Jean Bach's film, A Great Day in
Harlem.
Mrs. Hinton was born in Centralia, IL, in 1919. She was the sixth of eight
children; and at the time of her birth, her family, like many others who were
part of the Great Migration, was moving from Mississippi to Ohio. After
completing high school in Sandusky, OH, she moved to Chicago and attended Poro
College, a cosmetology school run by early African American
entrepreneur, Madam
Annie Malone. Although Mrs. Hinton graduated, she realized her true talents
were in bookkeeping, not hair dressing, and she remained in Chicago as an
assistant to Madam Malone.
Mrs. Hinton returned to school in the 70s earning bachelor and masters degrees
at Queens College of the City University of New York. She taught at several
Queens elementary schools, but gave up full-time work to accompany her husband
in his travels
The Hintons were active in many community organizations including the St.
Albans Congregational Church and both received numerous awards and honors.
Mrs. Hinton is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Hinton-Morgan; a
granddaughter Inez Mona Morgan; a great grandson Kamyron William
Morgan, all of
Atlanta; her sister Mary Louise Bellamy of Sandusky, numerous nieces and
nephews, and countless friends around the world.
The funeral service for Mrs. Hinton will be held Friday, May 9, at
10 am at the
St. Albans Congregational Church, 172-17 Linden Boulevard in Jamaica, Queens
(http://www.stalbanscc.org). The viewing is from 9 - 10 am.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to The Jazz Foundation of America
or the American Cancer Society.
