80226 --- Door: 7:30 p.m.
Show: 8:00 p.m. --- Tickets: $5 Members/Students (w/I.D.); $10
General admission --- Conrad Kehn is active as a performer, composer,
improviser, writer, artist, producer, engineer and educator in the
Denver area. He is the founding Director of The Playground; a chamber
ensemble dedicated to modern music. Conrad has been spotted on stage
with a variety of acts including the sporadically performing improv
ensembles Mystery Children & Rhythmic Void, now defunct rock bands
Kallisti, Skull Flux, and of course The Playground. As a soloist, he
specializes in vocal improvisation and contemporary music. His
composition style spans all genres touching on electro-acoustic music,
multimedia works, graphic scores, aleatory, and experimental rock, but
still remains grounded in the western music tradition. Conrad is
currently a lecturer of Music Theory, Composition and Music Technology
at the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music, where he directs
the Lamont Composers Concert Series. ALSO: Rhythmic Void --- Ambient
Experimental Jazz; a trio; powerful words that mean nothing. Ideas are
criminal. We're getting old (as we speak; we play). Ideas are suspect;
moans… squeaks……. collisions……… farts………craziness……..fun. Ideas are
void. Welcome to the club --- Malcolm Lynn Baker is a saxophonist,
composer, band-leader, and educator, who is the Director of the Jazz
Studies and Commercial Music program at the Lamont School of Music,
University of Denver. His performing experiences range from Bellson
to Zorn -- seriously he's never played with a prominent musician whose
name began with "A" - weird isn't it? He's at home in a wide variety
of styles; you're as likely to catch him leading a big band as playing
in a saxophone quartet, a hard bop small group, or a sound painting.
--- Originally from Detroit, Alan Joseph continues to be a musical
catalyst in the Pike's Peak Region and Denver. Presently he is
instructor of Guitar in the Jazz and Commercial Music Department at
the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music. Along with his
studio teaching at Lamont, Alan is part of the acclaimed Lamont Jazz
Faculty Combo "The Climb." Listening to Alan, one can always expect to
hear elements of "Straight Ahead" Jazz, Funk, Rhythm and Blues, and
even some off-beat "Poetry Jazz" (which at one time involved placing
microphones inside watermelons!). --- Kehn Clifford Duo --- Mark
Clifford began his percussion studies at the age of 8, and has since
blossomed into a versatile performer who is a regular fixture in the
Denver musical scene. He is currently a studying under John Kinzie and
Eric Gunnison at the Lamont School of Music. --- Colorado Creative
Music Series strives to provide a space for musical innovators to
perform and a place for audiences to see leading musical artists. Our
goal is to foster community that thrives on innovation, openness,
diversity, and talent. Over the past year we have presented some
incredible national artists, including John Zorn, Nels Cline, and
Elliott Sharp. However, we've slowly been building a strong foundation
for a series that focuses strictly on local artists. Colorado is home
to some extraordinary artists that perform internationally and record
with some of the world's best. We want to make sure Colorado audiences
have the opportunity to hear these great, homegrown musicians. That's
why we've created the Colorado Creative Music Series. This series will
be held monthly from January through December this year. Also, we want
our series to not only feature local artists, but to be run by local
artists. Every three months, Creative Music Works will choose a new
musician to be a curator. That curator will have 100% artistic freedom
to design the shows and choose artists. FMI: Paul Riola @

Lincoln Orchestra "The self-titled first
disc from Ninth and Lincoln (Dazzle Records) has a vast, ambitious
sound that must conjure up the open spaces composer/leader Tyler
Gilmore grew up with in rural Wyoming. You can practically hear the
currents blasting through the Wind River Canyon near his hometown of
Riverton, and the expansive, rockish arrangements really bring
something new to big-band charts. It doesn't hurt that Gilmore has
recruited local leaders to explore the music, including vibraphonist
Greg Harris, trumpeter Brad Goode and saxophonist Peter Sommer. It's
nice to hear such rejuvenating orchestral arrangements on a local
level, and here's hoping Ninth and Lincoln sells, oh, 10,000 of
these." To see this happenin' Orchestra stay tuned to: April 27th, 7pm

From Bob Montgomery: Hi everyone, just an update on Clark, he was in
Kansas City to perform with the Kansas City Youth Orchestra on May 16
and was taken to the University of Kansas Medical Cardiac Center with
severe chest pain. He had 97% blockage to his heart and stints were
put into place successfully (and fortunately in time). He is resting
well and doing therapy and is responding amazingly well for a man 87
years old (but then Clark has always been a fighter - both
figuratively and literally). He will probably go home in about a week.

TUEZZ., 6/3/2008 --- An evening with Return To Forever STARRIN' Corea,
Clarke, Di Meola & White --- Chick Corea ~ keyboardist; Stanley Clarke
~ bassist; Al Di Meola ~ guitarist; Lenny White ~ drummer Legendary
jazz/rock fusion group Return To Forever is reuniting for the first
time in 25 years for a summer tour of North America and Europe.
Beginning this June, the classic lineup of keyboardist Chick Corea,
bassist Stanley Clarke, guitarist Al Di Meola and drummer Lenny White
are scheduled to play between 30 and 40 concerts across North America.
After a month's worth of theater and small amphitheaters gigs in such
major U.S. cities as Los Angeles, Denver, San Francisco, Chicago and
New York, Return To Forever will travel to Europe in July. In support
of the upcoming tour, Return To Forever will release an anthology of
remixed and remastered songs from such classic albums as "Hymn of the
Seventh Galaxy," "Where Have I Known You Before," "No Mystery" and
"Romantic Warrior." Wait a minute: Corea, Di Meola, Clarke and White?
That's the classic lineup of Return to Forever, one of the groups that
defined the jazz-rock fusion of the '70s. They haven't played together
in 25 years, swore they'd never have a reunion. Right. But never say
never. (Look at the Eagles). Return to Forever is, well, returning.
And last month, the rehearsals were already underway for the RTF
reunion tour that undoubtedly will be the big jazz news of the summer.
During rehearsals, the loose and swinging mood triggered a palpable
sense of joy in the room -- the eye contact and spontaneous smiles
exchanged by the players were visible indications of the music's rich
improvisational symbiosis. It's the real deal: Return to Forever, back
again -- bringing a 21st century perspective to the visceral blend of
rock energy with the improvisation and compositional structures of
jazz that made the quartet a phenomenon of the '70s, competing with
musicians such as Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Weather Report and the
Mahavishnu Orchestra for the favor of both jazz and prog-rock
audiences. --- With only 1,870 seats, the Paramount Theatre is

D-Note Nightclub, 7519 Grandview Avenue, Arvada, CO / 303-Go-DNOTE
(Olde Town Arvada, next to Olde Town Pickin' Parlor) --- HitTime: 9PM
--- Cost: $10.00. FMI: www.cfcz.org --- The non-profit organization
Colorado Friends of Cajun-Zydeco Music and Dance will present zydeco
sensations J. J. Caillier (pronounced Cai-yay) and the Zydeco
Knockouts on Saturday, June 7, 2008, at the D-Note in Arvada. Though
he didn't become a zydeco artist until well past his teens, J. J.
Caillier was destined to play zydeco. His father's zydeco and blues
record store was where his vocation was initially seeded as a youth,
having spent considerable time there hanging out and rubbing shoulders
with such established artists as Buckwheat Zydeco, Rockin' Sidney and
the king of zydeco, Clifton Chenier. In the late 70's, J. J.'s father
became a catalyst of the zydeco revival by hosting a popular radio
show and producing recordings by stalwarts BooZoo Chavis and Chenier.
It was on Chenier's 1984 LP Country Boy, Now that J. J. made his
recording debut by playing keyboard tracks for the King. "It was an
experience that I'll never forget," he recalls. In 1996, he began
pursuing his own career by synthesizing Chenier's bluesy style and
Beau Jocque's relentlessly funky style to represent the best of the
old and the modern. "With a style like that," Caillier notes, "you
can make anyone move." During a typical performance, J. J. plays
several accordions with his all-time favorite being the sizable
piano-note accordion popularized by Chenier. Now a dozen years later,
J. J. has recorded five critically acclaimed CDs. The following CD
review comes from New Orleans' Off Beat magazine. J. J. J Caillier and
the Zydeco Knockouts --- Do You Wanna Dance --- Caillier Records ---
Zydeco is dead, some South Louisiana recordmen have been known to say,
so how do you explain the fact that Caillier is well on his way to
selling 4,000 units? And that's without any national tours or quick
run, out-of-state festivals. That's something that Caillier himself
can't fully explain other than that he wanted to do something
different this time out. His fifth disc is easily his best, one that
exudes remarkable freshness and infectious vitality. A technical
explanation might be that not every song relies on the same
tried-and-true zydeco chord progressions but borrows from jazz and
gospel structures, resulting in a slightly subtle, sonic facelift.
Caillier's not the only one doing this but is part of a
ground-breaking movement that incorporates other forms of black music,
besides R&B and funk and blues, into the fold. But more importantly,
everything works, even the cover of Los Lonely Boys' "Heaven."
Caillier's somewhat of a marketing strategist too, aiming at the
motorcycle crowd with a reggae-accented biker song while others cater
solely to the trail ride contingent. Analysis aside, Caillier just
wants you to dance, baby, and he's got the stuff to make that happen.

guided only by the spirit of free improvisation. However, this music
differs greatly from the commonly expected result of free improv.
Instead of meandering, pulse free atmospheres, this band has an
uncanny ability to create the impression of composed, rehearsed music.
There are songs spontaneously born, strong grooves, and overall a
feeling that all seven of these musicians were locked into each
other's presence. --- The concert was produced by Westword's 2008
Mastermind recipient Creative Music Works, a non-profit organization
dedicated to the support of musical innovators. Knowing that this
performance would be the only chance to capture the unique energy of
the first encounter, the night was recorded for release. The result is
one hundred minutes of music, spanning two discs, that covers a
stunning amount of territory, and both shows off the great individual
talents involved as well as the synergy of the ensemble as a whole.

Mona Clayton Hinton 1919-2008

Edmonia - Mona - Clayton Hinton, the widow of noted jazz musician and
documentarian Milt Hinton (1910-2000), died on May 3, 2008, at North Shore
Hospital after a long illness. She was living at the Hinton family
residence on
Milt Hinton Place in the Queens section of New York City.

The Hintons first met at Milt's grandmother's funeral in 1939 and were
inseparable for the next 61 years. Mona traveled extensively with Milt
throughout his career. She was the only spouse on the road with the Cab
Calloway Orchestra in the 1940s, where, according to Milt, she was extremely
helpful in finding rooms and meals for band members especially when the band
worked in small towns during the Jim Crow era. During the '50s and '60s when
Milt was working day and night in the New York studios, Mona kept
the books and
made often complicated transportation arrangements. And during the last two
decades of his life, Milt and Mona got to travel to jazz festivals and clinics
around the world - first class.

In 1958, at her husband's request, Mona took the celebrated home movie footage
(the only movie in existence) of the Esquire Magazine photo shoot on a Harlem
brownstone stoop that was memorialized in Jean Bach's film, A Great Day in
Harlem.

Mrs. Hinton was born in Centralia, IL, in 1919. She was the sixth of eight
children; and at the time of her birth, her family, like many others who were
part of the Great Migration, was moving from Mississippi to Ohio. After
completing high school in Sandusky, OH, she moved to Chicago and attended Poro
College, a cosmetology school run by early African American
entrepreneur, Madam
Annie Malone. Although Mrs. Hinton graduated, she realized her true talents
were in bookkeeping, not hair dressing, and she remained in Chicago as an
assistant to Madam Malone.

Mrs. Hinton returned to school in the 70s earning bachelor and masters degrees
at Queens College of the City University of New York. She taught at several
Queens elementary schools, but gave up full-time work to accompany her husband
in his travels

The Hintons were active in many community organizations including the St.
Albans Congregational Church and both received numerous awards and honors.

Mrs. Hinton is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Hinton-Morgan; a
granddaughter Inez Mona Morgan; a great grandson Kamyron William
Morgan, all of
Atlanta; her sister Mary Louise Bellamy of Sandusky, numerous nieces and
nephews, and countless friends around the world.

The funeral service for Mrs. Hinton will be held Friday, May 9, at
10 am at the
St. Albans Congregational Church, 172-17 Linden Boulevard in Jamaica, Queens
(http://www.stalbanscc.org). The viewing is from 9 - 10 am.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to The Jazz Foundation of America
or the American Cancer Society.
