The RMJB/Soundz Of Surprize - 04/14/08
Drummer John Arcotta, who knew Urso late in life, after the tenorist's move to the Denver area, commented back in 1999: "Even today, I see a lot of animosity toward Phil. I think people take Phil for granted. The guy was a monster -- he'd come out on the bandstand and kick everybody's ass, even his own. Knowing musically what he knows, I think people get a little intimidated." --- From Dan Osborn aka Ozzy @ dan@zjazz.net or www.zjazz.net or JazzDen@yahoogroups.com.

In case you missed it: DEDICATION: In Rememberance of Julie Hudson (07/20/1939 - 04/01/2008), Jazz Musician, Educator, Advocate, and Matriarch Of A Jazzy Family. A Ground Floor Member Of The IAJE servin' as Secretary/Treasurer in it's early yearzz & BEYOND; A Founding Member Of Denver/CO'zz "Gift Of Jazz" --- Lament -- May The Saints Go Marchin' On...
Hudson's spirit took her around world
Everything — from jazz to elephant-riding — interested Julie Hudson, who died of cancer at her Denver home April 1 at age 68. Hudson was a humanities and music teacher, traveled the world, played the piano and accordion, and started learning French at 65. Her son, former Mayor Wellington Webb spokesman Andrew Hudson, said she was always prepared for travel. "I'm surprised she didn't go to the Tattered Cover before she died to get a travel guide to the afterlife."
"She was a spark plug," said longtime friend Bob Montgomery of Greenwood Village. "She wanted to know about everything." When Hudson spoke to Montgomery's opera class, which is part of the VIVA program for senior citizens at the University of Denver, he said, "she dazzled the students with her knowledge and warmth. She was a kick in the pants." Hudson's curiosity and adventuresome spirit, which led her to ride a rip line in Costa Rica, travel on an elephant in Vietnam and climb the ruins in Machu Picchu, Peru, started early. Friend Olivia Bennett remembered that she and Hudson, as teenagers, would sneak people into drive-in theaters by hiding some of them in the trunk. "We were always getting into scrapes," said Bennett of Colorado Springs. "But there was no way you could be around Julie and be unhappy because she had an amazing outlook." Any excuse would work "to get her on an airplane," said her daughter, Melissa Phillips of Chicago. Hudson showed up unannounced for the birthday of one of Phillips' children and another time flew to Chicago to play the piano for a fundraiser in which Phillips was involved. Julie McGaw was born in Denver on July 20, 1939, graduated from South High School. She earned her bachelor's degree in music education at Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver and her master's in music education at the University of Colorado. While at DU, she met Dorsey Hudson, also a music major and a trombonist, and they married in June 1961. All four of their children got the music gene: Kathy Langr is a professional violinist in Salt Lake City, Phillips is a pianist, son Chris Hudson is a musician in Berlin, and Andrew Hudson is a local jazz bassist. Julie Hudson conducted the choirs at South High and taught music, arts and humanities at Front Range Community College. An accomplished jazz pianist, she also played organ at St. Vincent De Paul and Holy Cross Catholic churches, performed in an accordion band and played the chimes in the bell tower of the Denver City and County Building at Christmas.
In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by five grandchildren. Virginia Culver: 303-954-1223 or vculver@denverpost.com

QUELLE DOMMAGE: KCME COLORADO SPRINGS JAZZ BROADCASTER, LENNY MAZEL LOSES IS DJ GIG.
"ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST!!!"
"I was informed two weeks ago today that KCME 88.7 FM, independent public radio in Colorado Springs, a classical (156 hours per week) and jazz (12
hours per week) station for the last 31 years, was going the all-classical route, and that after 18 years of service, I was out of a job. Ironically,
I reported to this list in February that I was marking my 25th anniversary of presenting jazz music on the radio. I was hoping for another 25 years -
little did I know that I only had another few weeks. So it goes. I truly want to thank all the musicians, promoters and record labels that have
inundated me with new releases over the years. You can now hold off on sending promotional materials to KCME. Bright Moments, Lenny Mazel Ex-Jazz

A Burst of Fine New Releases by Bret Saunder Denver Post 4/6/2008 --- www.denverpost.com ---Ninth + Lincoln Orchestra "The self-titled first disc from Ninth and Lincoln (Dazzle Records) has a vast, ambitious sound that must conjure up the open spaces composer/leader Tyler Gilmore grew up with in rural Wyoming. You can practically hear the currents blasting through the Wind River Canyon near his hometown of Riverton, and the expansive, rockish arrangements really bring something new to big-band charts. It doesn't hurt that Gilmore has recruited local leaders to explore the music, including vibraphonist Greg Harris, trumpeter Brad Goode and saxophonist Peter Sommer. It's nice to hear such rejuvenating orchestral arrangements on a local level, and here's hoping Ninth and Lincoln sells, oh, 10,000 of these." To see this happenin' Orchestra stay tuned to: April 27th, 7pm :: The Ninth+Lincoln Orchestra :: Denver's only Modern-Jazz Big Band, Featuring the scene's best players! The ensemble will be premiering new music by Tyler Gilmore and will be performing outstanding new music by Darcy James Argue, and others. Pick up Ninth + Lincoln's new CD! --- The Ninth + Lincoln Orchestra is a musical project aiming to marry Denver's finest jazz players with new streams in the world of big band composition; to combine the shapes and textures of the new generation's aesthetic with the standard jazz ensemble. Its repertoire bridges the gap between jazz tradition and modern musical forms. The band features the finest performers in Colorado's music scene including members of Future Jazz Project, Convergence, The Ken Walker Sextet, The Czars, Hamster Theatre, and Jazz Faculty from all of the fine college music programs in the region. --- Ninth+Lincoln was formed in 2005 by Tyler Gilmore, the leader/conductor/and main composer for the ensemble. Inspired by his experiences at the Henry Mancini Institute he began forming the group in the Fall of 2005. Since then the band has steadily refined their sound and music library, focusing more on original music and tending toward a sound as influenced by electronic music and modern classical as standard jazz big band repertoire --- Contact Information: email: info@9thandlincoln.com

TUEZZ., 6/3/2008 --- An evening with Return To Forever STARRIN' Corea, Clarke, Di Meola & White --- Chick Corea ~ keyboardist; Stanley Clarke ~ bassist; Al Di Meola ~ guitarist; Lenny White ~ drummer Legendary jazz/rock fusion group Return To Forever is reuniting for the first time in 25 years for a summer tour of North America and Europe. Beginning this June, the classic lineup of keyboardist Chick Corea, bassist Stanley Clarke, guitarist Al Di Meola and drummer Lenny White are scheduled to play between 30 and 40 concerts across North America. After a month's worth of theater and small amphitheaters gigs in such major U.S. cities as Los Angeles, Denver, San Francisco, Chicago and New York, Return To Forever will travel to Europe in July. In support of the upcoming tour, Return To Forever will release an anthology of remixed and remastered songs from such classic albums as "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy," "Where Have I Known You Before," "No Mystery" and "Romantic Warrior." Wait a minute: Corea, Di Meola, Clarke and White? That's the classic lineup of Return to Forever, one of the groups that defined the jazz-rock fusion of the '70s. They haven't played together in 25 years, swore they'd never have a reunion. Right. But never say never. (Look at the Eagles). Return to Forever is, well, returning. And last month, the rehearsals were already underway for the RTF reunion tour that undoubtedly will be the big jazz news of the summer. During rehearsals, the loose and swinging mood triggered a palpable sense of joy in the room -- the eye contact and spontaneous smiles exchanged by the players were visible indications of the music's rich improvisational symbiosis. It's the real deal: Return to Forever, back again -- bringing a 21st century perspective to the visceral blend of rock energy with the improvisation and compositional structures of jazz that made the quartet a phenomenon of the '70s, competing with musicians such as Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Weather Report and the Mahavishnu Orchestra for the favor of both jazz and prog-rock audiences. --- With only 1,870 seats, the Paramount Theatre is Denver's best intimate concert venue! * General Theatre Information The Paramount Theatre is a non-smoking facility, accessible to all ages * Children 2 years and older must have a ticket * No cameras or recording devices are allowed into the theatre * No food or beverage of any kind may be brought into the theatre * The bar is open for most events, serving alcohol, soft beverages and snacks --- How to purchase tickets: In Person: At the Paramount Theatre Box Office after 4PM on event days OR At the Dick's Sporting Goods Park Box Office, 10AM – 5PM, Mon-Fri, 6000 Victory Way, Commerce City, CO 80022 --- The directions are: DSG Park is located nine miles northeast of downtown Denver in Commerce City, Colorado.
