Shep’s New Orleans Heard featuring Kid Merv—Colorado Tour!!! Following the Untimely Death of Frederick ‘Shep’ Sheppard; Band Mates Vow to Carry on New Orleans Jazz Tradition and to Fund Release of Shep’s Last Recording with Colorado Tour Shep’s New Orleans Heard featuring Kid Merv has scheduled a Colorado tour from March 9th through March 13th. The tour is a follow up to the New Orleans Christmas Gumbo & Benefit Concert for The Old-School Heart of New Orleans Music — Frederick ‘Shep’ Sheppard the show originally was scheduled for December 21st in Boulder but had to be canceled due to snow. As fate would have it Frederick ‘Shep’ Sheppard passed away on January 19th, just a few weeks after completing tracks for his first ever recording session. The Colorado Tour is a Tribute to Frederick ‘Shep’ Sheppard and his legacy, with proceeds being pledged to finish Post Production of Shep’s New Orleans Heard Compact Disc. Proceeds from sales of the CD will go to the newly created Frederick ‘Shep’ Sheppard Scolarship Fund which is to benefit young New Orleans musicians in an effort to continue Shep’s tradition. ‘Shep’ was one of New Orleans’ great Saxophonists and was a member of the Fats Domino band and also played with Ray Charles and Otis Redding. Kid Merv will fill in with Trumpet and vocals, Kid is a great New Orleans singer resembling the vocal sounds of Louis Armstrong. Kid Merv started playing with the Olympia Brass Band in 1981 (the youngest member ever asked to join). There he learned from Olympia leader Harold Dejan and assistant-leader Milton Batiste. Harold Dejan had been friends with Kid Merv's great uncle, trumpeter Henry "Kid" Rena. So Dejan would call Merv "Rena" or "Kid Rena"—that’s how Merv found out that Kid Rena was his great uncle.
