THIS TUES., 2/27 - State of the Art- Jazz Ensembles Play Modern Music for Big Band Jazz Ensembles I and II celebrate contemporary music for big band with music written by modern composers including Jim McNeely, Maria Schneider, and Tyler Gilmore. These composers stretch the idiom of big band writing and performing to create a dynamic and exciting program. Jazz Ensemble I is directed by Professor of Jazz and Saxophone Peter Sommer and Jazz Ensemble II is directed by Shilo Stroman, graduate student and local professional percussionist. Vocalist Suzanne Morrison will be a featured guest artist.

Congratzz to CO-based Vocalist Tina Phillips for her recognition, listin' in , and write-up in depth in world Who's Who in Jazz, Cabaret Music and Entertainment III, published by the Federation of American Musicians, Singers and Performing Artists(FAMSPA) written by Maximillien de Lafayette. To be listed one has to be nominated and accepted, this inclusion is quite an honor.

Congratzz to Sogstress Teresa Ross for being chosen by Dr. Herb Wong (jazz historian, educator, writer and authority on the subject) to be among his 12th Annual Blue Chip Jazz CD Awards in the vocal jazz category. The Saturaday nite until 2AM Jam @ The Burnsley hosted by The Jeff Jenkins-Mark Diamond-Paul Romaine Trio, & which was marvelously MC'd by Maestro Diamond, presented a jam-stoppin' Kevin Mahogany rendition of "When I Fall In Love" w/ Brad Goode(t), Pat Bianchi(p) --- yes, yes, yes, Mr. Bianchi was heard on HB3 & Piano in one nite! --- Fred Fuller(b), & Ashton Fuller(d); a trumpet duet (aka friendly cuttin' contest) w/ Brad & Sean Jones. Pianist Henry Butler was joined by Bassist Santi Debriano --- whose 5-String Basswork at The JFD was phenomenal --- & Drummer Peter Gregory. Dizzy Gillespie's MD/Pianist, & Oscar Peterson protege, Mike Longo, sat in. Mr. JVB (James Van Buren) started swingin' The Jam w/ "Jeannine" among other tunes, & before the nite was over, The SRO crowd heard from Henry Butler, Damani Phillips, Max Wagner, Wendy Fopeano; Chad Hicks, Tyler Neal, & Ken Walker. Did the folkzz groan when the house lights went on.

NY BIG BAND Conductor/Trombonist John Fedchock was omnipresent on the CO scene for a week, givin' Master Classes; sittin' in, doin' radio interviewzz, playin' @ both Peczz among other stintzz. He'll be back after his new CD is released in March. Stay tuned in.

Correcto: The phenomenal offering of "Sinister Ben" by 2-time (current!!) nationally acclaimed UNC/Greeley Jazz Lab 1 Band conducted by Maestro Dana Landry, was a Chuck Dotas composition, while it was The Lamont Jazz Orchestra that played the Tom Erickson tune.

Acclaimed trumpeter Wayne Bergeron will be coming to Denver to perform (and clinic) with the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra on Nov. 10th, 2007. Maestro Bergeron recently released a Concord CD of note: "Plays Well With Others". www.concordrecords.com.

At the end of the day when the house litezz dim: Maestra Peggy Gilbert, 102, dies, leaving a legacy of All Women (aka All-Girl) Jazz Bands. Her story will be available as an up-coming documentary made by musicologist & filmmake, Dr. Jeannie Poole. It will be titled, "Peggy Gilbert And Her All-Girl Band". There is also a CD avaiable on Cambria, "Peggy Gilbert And Her Dixie Belles", an All Woman Band that Maestra Gilbert formed when she was 69 years old (1974) and that performed until 1998.
